I’m the guy who thinks mandarin is the color of life itself; aqua the coolest cleanest ever; and amethyst the ruler of passions and the planets… So when Benjamin Moore announced the “Color of the Year” is “Simply White” and Sherwin Williams selected “Alabaster” as the color for 2016 I knew I was in trouble…
I took another look at the many sides of white. Contrary to my personal belief that white is not a color, it is the balanced blending of all colors. Probably explains why white goes with everything. Seriously. Everything.
John-William Interior Designer Kelly McKeand and I had the pleasure of working with the brilliant architect Tobin Smith on a new penthouse. Tobin’s commitment to white taught us a lot! This project demonstrates all that is good (and complicated) about white. Colors look brighter against white. Matte white is velvety. Gloss white is reflective or even metallic. White as soft as rabbit or hard as ice. There are about a billion shades of white. Go to the paint store and attempt to match anything white and you’ll understand. There are warm whites (with yellow or brown undertones) and cool whites (with green or blue undertones) and every other kind of white you can imagine.
The white on the ceilings, walls and shelves of this condo is not “pure”. It has enough gold to create warmth. It also captures the warmth of the beautiful wood floors. Note the reflective white lacquer piano, the softer white leather sectional and the cool and warm whites blended together in the area rugs. Be careful to choose a white with the right undertones to create harmony between surrounding elements.
Icy, clean grays and whites dominate the master bath pictured. Against snow white sprouts the green of living things. Flowers on a white background shout of spring and white flowers sing of weddings, love, romance and beauty. White silk is pure mystery. White silver dazzling starlight. White gold majesty. White and black the ultimate contrast of light and dark, ivory and ebony, good and evil, day and night…choose your metaphor – it exists because it’s true!
Before you paint your walls one color of the rainbow. Reconsider white. It’s every color you’ve ever seen and then some.
